Meebo - One iPhone Chat Application to Rule Them All

Taylor Reuben asked:

Apple’s June 2009 release of iPhone firmware version 3.0 was significant for a number of reasons. First, it gave the iPhone copy and paste capability. Users had been clamoring for this feature since the iPhone first hit the market. Apple’s smart phone was basically the first practical hand-held computer and lacking copy and paste functionality kept the web browsing, chatting, and email user experience from realizing its full potential. Second, the new firmware gave applications the ability to receive background push notifications. This meant that applications could deliver content and information to the user without actually being open or running. The other major complaint about the iPhone was that it did not have any multitasking ability. Apple intentionally allowed only one application to be running in any moment. The rationale behind this decision was that multitasking would negatively impact battery life and overall performance would become slower. Apple’s background push notification feature could give users the feel of multitasking while at the same time preserving battery life and speed of the device.

Unfortunately, it took developers a long time to implement push capability into their applications. It took developers for Facebook six months to update their very popular iPhone application so that it utilized push features. Another major application that has been the topic of many conversations in 2010 is Meebo. Meebo is a free instant messaging application that is light-weight yet feature-rich. This program stands head and shoulders above among its free competitors and even puts many of its paid competitors to shame. Meebo offers push notifications so that users are alerted to incoming messages without Meebo having to be open. There is also a Meebo desktop program that seamlessly syncs with the iPhone version so that a user can move from the iPhone to the desktop and vice versa without missing any messages. Finally, to round out Meebo’s feature list, it easily integrates with Yahoo, AOL Instant Messenger, and Facebook’s chatting environments. Best of all, it only takes about 10 seconds to load this very capable and free iPhone application.

Doing a Background Check - Use a Phone Application Or Traditional Background Check Company?

Cell Phones | Monday May 24 2010 8:32 pm | Comments (0) Tags: , ,
Irene Test asked:

What if you were able to do a background check at the click of a button? Recent applications for iPhones and similar mobile devices allow you to run a such a check on someone - or have one ran on you for employment purposes. In fact, some claim to be nearly as accurate as those by background reporting companies. What are some of the benefits and downsides of using such a program? The most significant factor is that no humans are involved to do research, such as for traditional background reporting.

The latest iPhone application, called the I-Check, by Acxiom, claims to allow confidential and in depth screenings directly from a cell phone. On a personal level, this could be beneficial, as the cost for doing a personal background check is nonexistent. The depth of such a screening should be questioned, however. Acxiom claims that their background screenings are more thorough than a basic search on the internet - but most screenings by potential employers and landlords are, anyway. Instead, the I-Check appears to be more thorough than an internet search and less than a traditional screening. Additionally, the scope of criminal records and employment and education history - three important parts for any employment background check - isn’t touched upon in the description by Acxiom.

Such a background check application allows users to share the results with a potential employer or landlord, and, for those on a budget, this makes the application more economical. But, in the scheme of thoroughness, is it practical? Some employers in the present have been accused of not doing thorough enough background screenings in regards to criminal history, especially for crimes that occurred out of state. In this case, shouldn’t screening for criminal history become stricter and more invasive to weed out candidates with a less-than-desirable past?

Urbanspoon iPhone Application

Chuck Schwarz asked:

The newest application I’ve tried for the iPhone 3G is Urbanspoon. Urbanspoon is designed to find restaurants near you. It uses a graphic interface similar to a slot machine. Based on your location, it will find nearby cities, and a diverse pool of restaurants to choose from. The search fields are city, type, and price range. You simply enter your location, shake your phone to start the “slot machine” style search, and it will find you a restaurant. The 3 criteria spin until they land on something. You can make one constant by “locking” that field and the other 2 will spin until they find something.

It actually has been very useful this last weekend as I was looking to find some restaurants that I hadn’t been to before. I was able to find a lot of restaurants I hadn’t heard of that had great reviews. Urbanspoon also lists recent reviews to the restaurants it finds. The best part I think, is that you can search by price range. I personally like to have a good idea of what things cost before entering the restaurant.

One feature of Urbanspoon that you wouldn’t notice is that it finds restaurants, not only close to the city you choose, but your location based on the Iphone’s GPS tool. It really is accurate at finding restaurants close to your location at that moment. I’ve noticed different results when being at a friends house, or local coffee shop a couple blocks from my house. It doesn’t specify the radius it searches, but I’d have to say its somewhere between 5-10 miles.

How to Achieve iPhone Tether

Thomas Martinez asked:

When Apple announced that they were going to release the iPhone on June 2007, a lot of people could not wait to get their hands on one. Many lined up outside the stores selling the iPhones and waited for hours. Even before the iPhone was released, there have been many press releases and ads showing its many features and capabilities.

Among these capabilities are its digital camera for still pictures and its ability to browse the web. Of course, you will have to pay for browsing the web using your iPhone since AT&T is an exclusive holder of the iPhones plans. All iPhone users are obliged to use AT&T exclusively in order to get an iPhone. Many people are happy with this since AT&T is not the leading mobile phone service provider.

Achieving iPhone Tether

Many techies have since tried to break down the iPhone and add in some applications that are not included in its features. Many have succeeded in achieving iPhone tether to allow you, the user, to access EDGE internet on your laptop. This means you can use you iPhone to have unlimited internet access.

There is a procedure that some really talented hackers have developed to install a SOCKS proxy server in your iPhone, the srelay. The srelay is free and is a 4/5 protocol proxy server. It supports IPv6 and IPv4 and can support sock connect/bind request in the protocol v4, v4a and v5. This iPhone tether makes you iPhone the source for an internet connection for your laptop.

The only problem with this very enjoyable addition to your iPhone is that it is not included in its job description. AT&T has not allowed this kind of technology to be done to your iPhone and may be in violation with your contract with them. The iPhone tether would have made you enjoy several hours of internet browsing in your laptop but AT&T could also cut off your subscription or charge you a bigger bill for this.

You would also have to consider the speed that the iPhone tether provides. AT&T could possibly be aware of this loophole and may even charge you for using the iPhone tether against the contract that you have. Just be sure to know the consequences when you try to do something which the iPhone is not supposed to do. It’s even possible that the iPhone battery might run out faster than expected due to this.

Apple IPhone Vs AT&T Tilt Comparison Review

Cell Phones | Saturday March 20 2010 2:16 pm | Comments (0) Tags: ,
Corey T Bruhn asked:

Both the iPhone and the Tilt are AT&T smartphones (at least in the United States), however, the overall main difference between the iPhone and the AT&T Tilt, according, at least, to the way the two devices are being marketed, is that the iPhone is being targeted more towards the consumer-user and the AT&T Tilt towards the business-user. Both smartphones, however, have excellent qualities appealing to both types of users.

Both the AT&T Tilt and the iPhone are touch screen smartphones, though the iPhone touch screen can be controlled by your fingers whereas controlling the AT&T Tilt touch screen requires using the included stylus. Beyond the touch screen, the iPhone has a single multi-purpose navigator button while the AT&T Tilt has several additional buttons.

Unlike the iPhone, the AT&T Tilt sports a unique screen design that allows users to slide out a full QWERTY keyboard from behind the main casing and tilt the display upwards so the user can view and control the phone similarly to the way one would a laptop or PC. The iPhone is a single candy bar unit with no sliding parts, though both the iPhone and the AT&T Tilt can be turned sideways for a widescreen view of the display screen as an alternative to the standard portrait.

The weaknesses of the feature-rich iPhone are in the way of the basic, essential functions of a smartphone - call quality and speed of the data network. Even though the AT&T Tilt uses the same EDGE data network as the iPhone, the Tilt has a wider array of wireless options available, including access to the 3G network, a feature the current generation of iPhone’s cannot claim (though a 3G iPhone is reportedly in the works). Also, according to a perusal of online customer feedback, the Tilt also boasts superior call quality over the iPhone. Having said that, however, the iPhone has up to 480 minutes of talk-time whereas the max talk time on the AT&T Tilt is only about half that.

In the way of features, the digital camera on the AT&T Tilt is 3.0 megapixels while the iPhone’s is only 2.0 megapixels. The Tilt includes a GPS but the iPhone does not. The call history on the Tilt is more substantial, indicating talk time duration and other details not available in the iPhone’s call history. Likewise, the Tilt displays a distinction between calls received and calls made whereas the iPhone does not. The processor on the AT&T Tilt is significantly slower than that of the iPhone, with a much higher tendency to freeze up and necessitate a reboot. The iPhone has a much larger built-in storage capacity (at 4-8 GB) while the AT&T Tilt can only hold 128 MB.

The major sweeping difference between the two devices is that the iPhone runs on Apple’s Mac OS X while the AT&T Tilt runs on Windows Mobile 6 Professional, which is tantamount to the difference between any Mac PC or laptop and the equivalent Windows PC or laptop. So the AT&T Tilt offers users, for example, the full Windows Office Mobile suite of programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) while iPhone users benefit from all the innovative software resulting from the newly issued iPhone SDK (software development kit). The bottom line here is that, since most computer-users classify themselves as either Mac-people or Windows-people, the decision as to which device is “better” really boils down to one’s personal preference between Mac and Windows.

The AT&T Tilt sells for at least $100 less than the iPhone.

iPhone Hacks & Software - Getting Closer to iPhone Unlocking

Cell Phones | Wednesday March 17 2010 4:49 am | Comments (0) Tags: ,
Philip Nicosia asked:

With the iPhone news of the Apple launch, the number of iPhone hacks has increased exponentially and a great deal of energy has been put into working through the iPhone software to find where the passwords and the “glue” is for a number of apps. The “Holy Grail” at the moment is iPhone unlocking.

iPhone unlocking is in fact most requested hack, and unlocking means that the iPhone can be used on any network and not just AT&T’s. There have been a couple of claims to have managed this iPhone hack ultimate but so far it’s all just rumors though it seems that a couple are indeed getting close and have managed to gain ownership of the file system. Sieving through the iPhone software and especially the gif images that are embedded seems to be the number preoccupation of any self respecting iPhone hack merchant around the globe.

One writer at GigaOM claims that they have gotten all the iPhone functions working except the telephone, voicemail and text features. To be honest I don’t see the point in all of this, getting an iPhone hack to unlock the beast is not going to be of much use unless you use the iPhone overseas and on top of that you’ll have no 3G support.

Where I do see a value in getting the iPhone software opened up, is that once we have the iPhone unlocked then being able to use the device as an ultimately portable minicomputer working over a wifi network then we have something that’s going to be useful.

On the iPhone news grapevine, it’s not just iPhone hacks that are streaming in thick and fast, there are also a series of full-blown web apps which I have to say is pretty impressive - well done guys! Probably the best one at the moment is the iPhone hack “iChat for iPhone” which provides you with IM capability on AIM. More than that, the iPhone software source is available for this hack and you can host it on your own machine. If you are really serious about keeping up-to-date with the latest in iPhone unlocking and iPhone hacks then check out the iPhone Dev Wiki that seems to me to be the closest to getting an iPhone unlocking hack.

iPhone software that you can download onto your new iPhone can be found at iPhone Applications on the web. Here you’ll find all iPhone software and applications such as iWeather and more games than you can shake a stick at. Unfortunately, until we get iPhone hack that will open up the iPhone to third party applications we are going to have to make do with Apple iPhone software that we’re allowed to play with at the moment.

How long before we have an iPhone hack that will help us unlock the iPhone completely is like asking how long is a piece of string, but with the energy that is being devoted to it, I guess it could be any day now.
